Street Photography In & Around Benidorm

Since 2013 (with the exception of 2016) I have been spending a number of days each March in Benidorm on the Costa Blanca in Spain.  My mother and step-father spend some of the winter out there and I go out for their final week to help them come back to the UK.  It’s also an excellent excuse to spend a number of days wandering around with camera snapping candid street photography.

The great thing about Benidorm is there is never any shortage of things happening.  So those few days away are kind of my street photography equivalent of a big game safari.  However it’s not just Benidorm I limit myself to as I also try and get out to some of the surrounding towns and resorts on the Costa Blanca whilst there.  This year I spent a day shooting street photography in Altea and another day in Alicante.

I also decided to mix things up this year.  In addition to shooting digitally on a small and lightweight Olympus Pen Lite EPL5, fitted with a VF4 electronic viewfinder (that slots into the hotshoe slot on the body) and the Panasonic 14mm (28mm equivalent) f/2.5 lens, I also decided some film street photography.  So I flew out with an old Olympus XA4 compact camera and a few rolls of Kodak Portra 400 colour film packed away in my suitcase.

I’ll post about the film results separately once I have the rolls back and developed.

I also decided to keep track of the steps I took during the 6 days there.  I was literally gobsmacked to see by the end of my stay I had walked a total of 177,400 steps.  That’s a daily average of 29,573 steps walked.  In other words that was a total of 62.4 miles walked or a daily average of 10.4 miles.  Most of that was done in pursuit of my street photography.  It would be fair to say that street photography certainly keeps me active.

Anyhow, here are 75 of the okay street photos I shot during my stay.  If you enjoy them, I’d love for you to share them and this post across your social media.  I’d love t hear any thoughts and comments you may have.

    1. Thank you so much for your very kind words Frank. I really appreciate it. I find street photography is something you get better at the longer you do it. I also feel I understand both it’s philosophy more and what appeals to me. In the early days it’s too easy to shoot with an audience in mind. Now I just shoot what appeals to me personally. And that seems to resonate more with my audience. Once again, thank you for visiting and commenting.
